At least four dead in shooting at Oakland university; suspect arrested in Alameda

OAKLAND -- Several people have been hurt -- and possibly four killed -- in a shooting this morning at a Christian university in East Oakland, authorities said.

Police would not confirm the total number of fatalities from the shooting at Oikos University on Edgewater Drive, but said that a suspect was in custody and had been arrested in Alameda at South Shore Center.

People were being evacuated by armored vehicles from the building at 7850 Edgewater Drive, some taken away by ambulance. More are being triaged outside the building and Oakland's Highland Hospital reports that some victims are being treated there.

The shooting happened about 10:23 a.m. in a classroom at Oikos University, when the suspect came in and fired multiple shots.

The school offers degrees in religious, musical and nursing fields, according to its website.

Pastor Jong Kim, who founded the school about 10 years ago, said he did not see the shooting but heard about 30 gunshots.

"I stayed in my office," he said, imitating the sound of rapid shots.

Kim said the shooter had previously been a nursing student at Oikos but was no longer enrolled. He said he was unsure whether the shooter had been expelled or dropped out voluntarily.

In Alameda, an area near Safeway at South Shore Center where the suspect was arrested has been cordoned off with yellow police tape.

Police have shut down streets in the area and a 12-story office building at 7677 Oakport has been locked down for security as well, according to an announcement broadcast to employees at 11:50 a.m. The building includes offices for the Oakland Tribune, TSA, as well as part of the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.
