British woman, 34, missing on Greek island of Ikaria after going for a run and disappearing

Dr Christopher went missing on Monday

A major search has been launched on a Greek island for a missing British woman who went for a run and failed to return.

Police, firefighters, coast guard officers, volunteers and at least one helicopter are involved in the search for Dr Natalie Christopher, 34, an Oxford-educated astrophysicist.
A keen mountain racer and hiker, she went for a run on Monday on the island of Ikaria and has not been seen since.

Dr Christopher's disappearance was reported by her 38-year-old partner, with whom she was on holiday.
He had woken up on Monday morning to find she had left a note to say she was off for a run. But she did not return.
A spokesperson for the Foreign Office in London told The Telegraph: "We are assisting the family of a British woman reported missing in Ikaria, and are in contact with the Greek authorities who are conducting the search for her.”

The couple live in Cyprus. They were staying in the Kerame area of the island and had been planning to return to their home in Cyprus on Monday.
On Tuesday, concerned friends posted comments on her Facebook profile.
“Guys, any news from Natalie??? I’ve heard she is missing in Ikaria since Monday. OMG I hope she is well,” one wrote.

She is a keen sportswoman, with posts on her Facebook account showing her love of hiking, running and participating in mountain races.
A Greek navy helicopter equipped with thermal imaging from the nearby island of Chios was involved in the search, according to local reports.
"There's a lot of people involved in the search," a spokeswoman for the Greek police told The Telegraph. "We're doing all we can to find her."

A professional astrophysicist, Dr Christopher is involved in research at the European University Cyprus.
According to a professional profile, “she works to develop our understanding on the evolution of galaxies, by fitting models to data collected from telescopes and satellites.”

She also studied at Oxford University.

She launched an initiative called Cyprus Girls Can, which encourages girls and young women to get involved in sport.
Her disappearance follows the rape and murder last month of an American scientist who went for a jog on Crete.

Suzanne Eaton’s body was found dumped inside a Second World War bunker a week after she went missing.
A 27-year-old local man confessed to the murder of the 60-year-old molecular biologist, who had been attending a conference on Crete.

Kaveri teki katoamisilmoituksen. Heidän oli määrä palata Kyprokselle tänään.
Kadonnut on alkujaan lontoolainen.
Christopher on mukana tutkimuksessa Kyproksen Eurooppa-yliopistossa.

Natalie näkyy saaneen mitskun Aya Napan triatholissa.
Kiipeileekin.

Search continues in Ikaria for missing Natalie
August 7, 2019 at 8:06am

The search resumed at the first day of light in Ikaria for British Cypriot astrophysicist Natalie Christopher, 34, who has been missing since Monday.

Her last contact was with her Cypriot partner on Monday morning when she told him that she was out jogging. The couple had been in Ikaria since August 3 and were due to leave the island on Monday. She was reported missing at noon on Monday after the partner was unable to reach her again by phone.

Search teams looking for the Nicosia-based scientist by land, air and sea continued until late on Tuesday night.

A reporter from Ikaria told CyBC on Wednesday morning that the focus is on a route the missing woman is believed to have taken on her jog, as well as the area where a signal from her mobile telephone was picked up at around midday on Tuesday.

Search teams were boosted by a helicopter as well as teams from Samos. The Cyprus News Agency reports that a second helicopter is due to join the search today.

The hotel room where the couple were staying has been sealed off and the results of scientists tests on items taken from the room are expected today.

According to Greek media reports, a few spots of blood were found in the room which are believed to be the result of a nose bleed. There has been no confirmation from police.

The Cyprus News Agency said that as from Tuesday afternoon, the search has focused on an area about 10 kilometres from where the couple are staying.

Taking part are police and fire fighters as well volunteers.

A group of friends of Natalies’ are also trying to get to Ikaria to help in the search.

Former fire chief Markos Trangalos said late on Tuesday that they had asked him to lead this effort and said the group were looking for airline seats to Greece, as all airplanes are full.

According to CyBC’s Athens correspondent, a signal was picked up from the missing woman’s mobile phone on Tuesday but then was lost again.

Uutinen tältä aamulta.
Vjhjataan mm. , huoneesta löytyneen veritippoja , jotka olisivat nenästä ?
Poliisi ei ole vahvistanut tätä.
Ko. huone on eristetty poliisin toimesta.
Natalien kavereita on matkalla saarelle.

Toinenkin naistutkija katosi Kreikan saaristossa kesken juoksulenkin
- heinäkuussa kadonnut Suzanne Eaton löytyi murhattuna luolasta
https://www.iltalehti.fi/ulkomaat/a/012 ... ae25d5ff74
Tänään klo 11:40

Kateissa oleva tutkija on kotoisin Britanniasta.

According to Greece's national broadcaster Ant1 News, Natalie's body was found in a ravine by a volunteer firefighter.

Police told The Sun Online they are not willing to make a formal statement until the body is removed from an "inaccessible ravine" and formally identified.

Firemen and other rescue crews are attempting to remove the body from the spot in an area known as Katafygi about 5km from the Brit's hotel in Kerame - in the north of the island.
Local media also reports that homicide detectives from the Greek capital of Athens have arrived in Ikaria and have taken over the case.

Cops have told The Sun Online that blood stains found on Natalie's bed sheets have been sent to a laboratory for DNA testing.
According to reports, the scientist's boyfriend said the blotches were the result of a nose bleed.

Vapaaehtoinen palomies on löytänyt Natalien ruumiin rotkosta.
Natalien vuoteesta löytynyt veri on lähetetty dna-testiin.

She was lying half-a-mile from the hotel in the village of Kerame where she and her 38-year-old Cypriot boyfriend had been staying, the national broadcaster Ant1 News reported.
Rescue teams were planning to remove her body from the steep slope and her partner is understood to have identified the body.

Initial investigations have revealed Dr Christopher may have fallen when she attempted to climb the the rocky cliffs without any equipment, Skai reported.
The volunteer firefighter who discovered Dr Christopher noticed rocks which appeared to have come loose during her suspected fall.

Specialist murder detectives earlier travelled to Ikaria to take over the case, according to reports.
The detectives regularly deal with disappearances and their presence on the island doesn't necessarily mean they suspect a murder, police sources said.

It had previously been reported the police were investigating blood stains found on a bedroom pillow. Dr Christopher's partner attributed these to a nose bleed she'd had the night before her disappearance, Skai reported.

Natalien kyproslainen poikakaveri on ilmeisesti tunnistanut ruumiin.
N on äkkinäisten havaintojen mukaan voinut kiipeillä kallioilla ilman varusteita. Sitten pudonnut ? Tähän voisi viitata irronneet kivet , joita on ruumiin vierestä löytynyt.

The Sunin mukaan ruumiin löytöpaikka on toisaalla.

Ihan komea saarihan tuo.

Mahdollinen pariskunnan hotelli ? Kerame on mainittu edellä jossain uutisessa.

Boulderointi onkin sitten eri juttu, sitäkin tuolla kovasti mainostetaan.

Tragic British astrophysicist Natalie Christopher was 'crushed by a boulder when she fell into 65ft ravine after rocky path collapsed' during run on Greek island of Ikaria
Otsake linkistä.

Sanotaan Natalien päälle pudonneen isoja lohkareita.
Paikka olisi 600 m - 1 km hotellista Kerana.
